ITINERARY
Day 1
Arrive Cape Town where we will be met by our guide and transferred to our guesthouse, nestled at the base of Table Mountain. Our guesthouse is superbly appointed, cosy and friendly and we will spend the next four nights here.
Day 2
Today we walk to the summit of Table Mountain (cable car is an option for those who do not wish to hike). A picnic lunch is enjoyed along the way.
Day 3
Today we travel to the Cape of Good Hope nature reserve. We will spend a full day here hiking some of the beautiful trails in the reserve. Spectacular coastal views. Picnic lunch.
Day 4
A cultural focus for today. We take the boat out to Robben Island, the infamous prison island where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 17 years. We journey to the Cape Flats, a township area, normally not on the tourists itinerary, where we take a walking tour and meet the friendly locals. A highlight of our time there is a welcoming lunch of local dishes such as hearty stews, soups, breads and salads prepared in the home of a local family, friends of our guide. During the lunch a local African percussion band materialises to entertain us with lively local music and songs. This is a day that most of our groups always consider a highlight as our access to this totally non-tourist area is only facilitated by our guide having friends willing to invite us into their neighbourhood for a truly urban African experience.
Day 5
Travelling out of Cape Town and into the dramatic mountains of the winelands. This is a picturesque region and here you will see fine examples of the unique Cape Dutch architecture typical of the early settler’s farms and homes and later the wine estates. We will hike in the morning along lovely trails before stopping at a wine estate to enjoy tastings of the local produce and then a lunch in a lovely wine estate setting. We then make our way to our accommodation for the evening, a beautiful Cape Dutch country house set among delightful gardens and grounds.
Days 6 to 8
Travelling by 16 seater coach we make our way to the Cederberg wilderness area for 3 days of walking and game activities. Here we are accommodated in one of the finest lodges in South Africa. Our hosts will introduce the delights and treasures of the area to us in a series of walks and game drives where we will be thrilled to sight zebras, many species of antelope and wonderful bird life.
Day 8
Return to Cape Town. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore Cape Town.
Days 9 to 12
Fly from Cape Town to Durban where we are met and transferred by coach to the magnificent Drakensburg Mountains. Accommodated in our stunning lodge with views of the famous Cathedral Peak we will take day hikes along the mountain trails enjoying the dramatic scenery and sweeping view from the tops of the ridges and along the deep gorges.
Day 12
Transfer by coach to Durban and fly to Johannesburg. Here we will be met and transferred to Sun City for a night of entertainment and fun at the larger than life Sun City complex.
Days 13 to 16
Transfer from Sun City to Madikwe Game Reserve. Our exclusive lodge is set overlooking a series waterholes where metres from your cabin you can observe the various varieties of game coming down to drink. Our hosts will take us on morning and evening game drives and game walks. The region is known for the Big Five, lion, elephant, giraffe, buffalo and rhino (both black and white) as well as cheetah, leaopard, wild dogs and various species of antelope.
Day 16
We bid farewell to the magical African bush and make our way to Johannesburg Airport stopping for a picnic lunch along the way. Tour ends.
